- a muslim psychology -

Prophet Muhammad PBUH recommended the Muslims many morning and evening adzkar [1] and du’a [2]. There is one du’a which to me, reflects a working model of a person’s mental state.

The du’a is (a transliteration):

“Allahumma inni a’udzubika min al-hammi wa al-hazan, wa a’udzubika min al-’ajzi wa al-kasal, wa a’udzubika min al-jubni wa al-bukhl, wa a’udzubika min ghalabati ad-dayni wa qahri ar-rijaal.”

which translates into :

“Oh Allah! I seek refuge in You from grief and sadness, from weakness and from laziness, from cowardice and from miserliness, from being overcome by debt and from being overpowered by men (other people).”

There are 8 things that feature in this du’a:

  1. grief/anxiety (risau tak tentu hal)
  2. sadness/depression (sedih berpanjangan)
  3. weakness (lemah)
  4. laziness (malas)
  5. cowardice (bacul)
  6. miserliness (kedekut)
  7. debt ridden (hutang keliling pinggang)
  8. overpowered (tidak merdeka)

In other words, Islam promotes a philosophy of composure and happiness, might and diligence, courage and generosity, minimal or debt free as well as independence and freedom.

While these are qualities in individuals, the principles can also translate into social attitude and values in governing.

[1] Plural for zikr - remembrance of God.

[2] Supplication to God.
